Annual Conference

 Welcome to Washington, D.C.!

Washington, D.C., (officially known as the District of Columbia) is the capital of the United States of America. It is located between Virginia and Maryland on the Potomac River.

In 1790, the U.S. Congress directed the selection of a new capital site, 100 sq mi, along the Potomac River, and included land ceded from the Commonwealth of Virginia and the State of Maryland. In 1846, however, Congress returned to Virginia their original land, keeping the area ceded by Maryland for the city. The seat of government was transferred from Philadelphia to Washington on December 1, 1800, and President John Adams became the first president to reside in the White House.

The history of Washington, D.C. (officially known as the District of Columbia) is tied to its role as the capital of the United States. The site along the Potomac River was chosen for the capital city by George Washington. The city came under attack during the War of 1812 in an episode known as the Burning of Washington. Upon the government's return to the capital, it had to manage reconstruction of numerous public buildings, including the White House and United States Capitol Building. The McMillan Plan of 1901 helped restore and beautify the downtown core area, including establishing the National Mall, along with numerous monuments and museums.
