In January of 2009, Showtime premiered the first of 12 episodes of United States
of Tara, the first television series whose central character has Dissociative Identity
Disorder (DID). Born of a conversation between Steven Spielberg and his wife, Kate
Capshaw, and brought to life by the creative script writer Diablo Cody (she wrote
the script for Juno), the stories and plot lines of the United States of Tara have been
significantly influenced by consultation from two experts on DID (Richard Kluft and
Colin Ross) and several persons with DID.
This two-hour plenary panel will discuss
the consultation process, the scripts, and the process of bringing to life the portrayal
of Tara, her alters, and the husband, son, and daughter who deal with their DID
wife and mother on a daily basis. A 26-minute episode of United States of Tara will be shown; audience Q & A and discussion will follow.
Panel members include
Richard P. Kluft, MD, Colin Ross, MD, Mary Jo Kaplan (who produced Showtime’s
superb discussion/explanation of DID with Dr. Kluft), and additional Showtime/
United States of Tara personnel (who are still being determined at the time of this posting. Please check in the future for updates to this page).
