The americanization of dissociation
Panelists will discuss America’s undue cultural influence on psychiatry around the world. Dr. Rudegeair will compare the different versions of dissociation in DSM-IV and ICD-10 and will criticize American attitudes that is implicit in the term culture-bound syndrome. Dr. Ross will discuss the incidence of trance and possession in people with DID in various cultural settings. Dr. Lewis-Fernández will discuss the idioms of distress among Latinos, especially Ataque de Nervios. Dr. Şar will discuss the sociocognitive factors in the aetiology of dissociation, including the American contributions (and impositions) on the world’s understanding of trauma and dissociation.
