INSTRUCTOR: Thomas G Carlton, M.D., Immediate Past President of the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation. Doctor Carlton was trained in the use of the SCID-D by Doctor Marlene Steinberg, the author of the SCID-D.
ABSTRACT: Patients with dissociative disorders often present with a great deal of impairment and distress, but the diagnosis is not always clear. Recent studies on multiple continents suggest that dissociative disorders are under-diagnosed. Some authors, however, believe that dissociative disorders are over-diagnosed and that the diagnosis of a dissociative disorder is often made on a purely subjective basis. The Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV® Dissociative Disorders (SCID-D-R) provides the opportunity for evidence-based assessment of dissociative disorders. The first part of this workshop will provide the participants with knowledge necessary to understand the SCID-D and its use in the clinical setting. The second part of the workshop will provide the participants with the opportunity for supervised and coached practical experience with the SCID-D.
PREREQUISITE: participants must meet at least one of the following requirements or have permission of the Instructor.
Possess a valid license to practice as a physician, psychologist, clinical social worker, marriage and family therapist, or similar license allowing the participant to treat patients with mental disorders. Physicians who have not completed a residency in psychiatry will be admitted at the discretion of the instructor.
Possess an academic appointment in an appropriate field at an accredited institution of higher learning.
Be a full-time graduate student or post-graduate trainee at an accredited institution of higher learning. The field of study must be appropriate to the training. Full-time student status must be confirmed by the registrar of the institution of higher learning; and the student must present a letter of recommendation to take the training from a faculty advisor, attesting that the student is appropriately prepared for the training.
OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of the workshop, participants will:
Describe the five major manifestations of dissociation addressed in the SCID-D.
Identify the strengths and weaknesses of the SCID-D as a tool for assessment and treatment planning.
Explain and demonstrate the process of administration of the SCID-D.
Explain and demonstrate the process of interpreting SCID-D results and applying these results in the clinical setting.
