Welcome Letter

the ripple effect: trauma & dissociation in the mainstream
 March 30 – April 3, 2017
Crystal Gateway Marriott
 Arlington, VA

Welcome to ISSTD’s 34th Annual International Conference.  This year we explore how Complex Trauma and Dissociation appears in, confounds and complicates mainstream therapies and other ordinary psychotherapeutic situations. Welcome to the greatest gathering of minds on understanding the impact of abuse on the human spirit.

As therapists, we have heard from colleagues and fellow clinicians how every day cases have grown increasingly difficult and complex; how every day clients strangely developed patterns of “resistance” and decompensated into self-harming behaviors.  As researchers, we hear from colleagues who claim that dissociation is an iatrogenically caused confabulation of fantasy prone patients; a North American fad that has past its prime and of no useful value.

At this year’s gathering, we seek to explore the validity of dissociative disorders, the pervasive presence of complex trauma and the prevalence of dissociative defenses throughout mainstream psychotherapy.

We will open the conference with Dr. Bruce Perry discussing neurobiological substrates and underpinning of the dissociative process and the impact of trauma on developing minds. Sunday opens with a panel of international experts comprised of Julian Ford, Dolores Mosquera, Warwick Middleton and John O’Neil debating the co-morbidity, confluence, and confusion of Borderline Personality Disorder and Dissociative Identity Disorder. We will close the meeting on Monday morning with Pamela Alexander examining intergenerational trauma.

In 2017, we will be meeting at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington, VA, just outside of Washngton, DC,  from March 30th through April 3rd.  The conference site is just a Metro stop away from DCA Airport and only four stops from the National Mall and other great sites in the DC area.

Looking forward to seeing you in Washington D.C.!
