The Necessary Disclaimer Before the Search for Therapists
A letter from the ISSTD Explaining and Exclaiming our Disclaiming
The International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation was
founded as a membership organization. However, our members
have recognized that this also means providing services. We
do that now for our members, and for the community at large.
We have had so many requests for the names of therapists who
understand dissociative disorders that we finally decided to
automate the process and free up time for other tasks at Headquarters.
But, in doing that, there is no opportunity, other than this
message, to tell you that we legally can't recommend anyone
to you, even if we would like to do that. We neither rate,
nor qualify therapists for practice. That is the job of licensing
agencies in local jurisdictions. Like it or not, we live in
a litigious society.
So here is the statement our legal consultant thinks is a
reasonable, plain English effort to tell you what we can't
tell you, and also tell you what you might find useful. But,
you still need to make your own judgment. We can't do that
for you.
Now here is the disclaimer part:
The ISSTD is providing this list of ISSTD members within or
close to the
geographical area that you have specified. We are merely providing
these names for your convenience and do not endorse any of
the
individuals listed nor do we make any judgment about the appropriateness
of any therapist for your particular needs. The people on the
list have
shown enough interest in the fields of trauma and dissociation
to join
the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation. You
should
expect to gather your own information about the level of skill,
interest, experience and/or other qualities of the people listed
as you
make your own decision about a psychotherapist. The ISSTD takes
no
responsibility for any decisions you make, nor do we take responsibility
for the outcome of any decisions you make.
