Course: This
course provides training on diagnosing and treating dissociative
symptoms and disorders in traumatized children and adolescents.
The history and theories related to dissociation will
be discussed. Treatment including stabilization techniques
and psycho-education related to dissociation; processing
traumatic memories (using both expressive and verbal
modalities) and creating dialogue between alternate self-states;
managing special problems such as sexual acting out;
family work; integration techniques; and collaborative
work with the mental health, educational and legal systems
will be described. There will be opportunity to discuss
individual cases and specific problems that arise when
working with these children and adolescents. Required
readings will be provided on a CD and are included in
the course fee. See our Child

Intended Participants: Licensed
mental health professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists,
clinical social workers, mental health counselors) who
are personally treating a child or adolescent with Complex
PTSD, a significant trauma history, or dissociation.
Other professionals are encouraged to apply (supervisors
of child or adolescent treatment centers, foster care
or adoption center directors or supervisors, university
faculty who prepare students to work in the field of
child maltreatment, and licensed mental health professionals
interested in learning more about treating maltreated
children & adolescents). Dr. Wieland will determine
if their background fits the seminar content.
Presenter : Dr. Sandra Wieland is a registered clinical psychologist and play therapist, who has worked extensively with children, adolescents and adults who, because of neglect or trauma (direct abuse, witnessing abuse, medical procedures), experience behavioural distress, anxiety, dissociation, and/or PTSD. She blends cognitive, behavioural, and EMDR therapies within a psychodynamic approach. Before moving to Victoria , she was the founder and clinical director of the Centre for Treatment of Sexual Abuse and Childhood Trauma in Ottawa . She presently runs a private practice at the Centre for Counselling & Therapy in Victoria . Sandra is the co-chair of the Child and Adolescent Task Force of the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation and a frequent presenter at the ISSTD conferences. She is a supervisor with Play Therapy International and Play Therapy Canada . She has written several books for therapists, one of which includes a chapter on dissociation. Sandra has presented workshops in Canada , the U.S. , Europe, South America and South Africa . |
